Chapter Six

Jade had never been so happy in his entire life, not including the night Stephen made love to him for the first time. There was no topping that. Knowing Stephen was willing to put aside fears and doubts about their future, was enough to send him into a state of bliss. Although he didn’t want to appear needy, he did need to be close to the other man for a while. At least until his world settled down around him again, once he got used to the idea of remaining in Silver, and marrying the man he loved. They had a home, too. Colt had suggested they go look at it and they were doing so.

The drive from town wouldn’t be a long one, but they had returned to the hotel to deliver Bart’s pizzas and to give him a bag of Miss Prissy’s favorite cat food. They had then walked the dogs before loading them into the car. The GPS in Jade’s car obviously wasn’t able to deal with rural areas. After only two wrong turns, they finally found the lane leading to the house.

And what a house it was. Jade’s heart did flip-flops in his chest as he got his first glimpse of the two-story persimmon-red farmhouse. No one had lived in it for years. As one of Colt Redford’s own properties, it had been maintained, occasionally used as a guesthouse. There was heat and water. It was furnished. There was absolutely no reason why they couldn’t move right in.

Jade fell in love with the house as soon as he saw it. He bounced in his seat and put the window down so he could stick his head out. The icy wind hurt his face, threatening to freeze his grin in place, but he didn’t care.

“Excited, honey?”

“A little,” Jade admitted. “Do you really think we can stay here and start over?”

“It’s as good a place as any. Better, probably. I would rather find a place I love and take a stand, than run and always look over my shoulder.”

Jade was glad Stephen hadn’t argued about having protection. A lot of men like Stephen, men who were macho and able to defend themselves, probably would have. There hadn’t been a peep, however. Jade guessed Stephen kept silent because the four men were also protecting Jade. He knew he could also be a target, or a tool to be used by someone to get to Stephen. Yeah, it wasn’t an idyllic situation, but it was better than the alternative.

“Redford was right about one thing,” Snake said from the rear seat. “The house is in a good position. It wouldn’t be easy for anyone to approach, without being seen.

The house sat on higher ground. There were fences enclosing the areas on either side of the lane, across which was a gate Colt had given them the code for. Two other buildings were some distance away. He guessed the one was a barn. He was interested in seeing that. He had two ponies and a horse he could bring here, if they were truly staying.
